Apple’s iPhone 11 may be all about the camera
Apple is reportedly planning to release three new “iPhone 11” models later this year. Rumours have suggested a square “bump” on the back of the phone housing three cameras. Apple has decided to break with tradition here and give the next iPhones eye-catching names…
Just kidding. They’re to be called plain old iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Max and iPhone 11R.
Now, so far there’s been something of a mixed reaction to the leaks of the new iPhone. Many people think the square camera bump is pretty ugly. However, it does indicate that the phone’s cameras are to be the main feature.
Which is good new for iPhone videographers. Possibly.
A square lens housing
Well, we can’t know exactly what we’re in for until the phones are released. That said, we’re told there will be a standard lens, an ultrawide and a telephoto. In truth, that just means Apple are catching up with Samsung, Huawei and others.
The square lens housing has also appeared (and will appear) on other smartphones. The yet to be released Google Pixel 4 will have one and one already appears on the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. The square bump on the Mate 20 Pro is a little smaller and centered, which is somewhat more aesthetically appealing.
Above is a comparison between the Huawei Mate 20 Pro and the proposed iPhone 11 design. You have to say, that iPhone camera design is pretty ugly if that is indeed how it turns out.
When we were partners with Samsung, they sent us a long list of rules on how we could use their logo. This included how close or large neighbouring objects could be so as not disturb the appearance of the logo. Clearly, the iPhone 11 designers were not given such a rule book by Apple.
But of course these designs are speculations and not official designs. And I’m pretty sure Apple couldn’t let that design onto the market… could they?
What’s new?
The new iPhones will include Apple’s latest A13 chip and a new Taptic Engine that’s codenamed “leap haptics.” There are as yet few details on what the Taptic Engine will provide, but it looks like the 3D Touch feature is to be replaced.
The new wide angle camera will also enable a new Smart Frame feature. This is reported to capture the area around the framed part of a picture, thus you can adjust the framing and perspective. Hmm, you mean cropping and rotating?
Another suggestion for improvements are a front-facing camera capable of capturing in slo-mo at 120 fps.
Aside from that, reports suggest there will be little major innovations for the next iPhone. Apple is expected to keep the same display resolutions as the existing iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR, and these new models look set to simply replace Apple’s current lineup. But they could be keeping big surprises unleaked… couldn’t they?
Is that a good marketing strategy? Lower people’s expectations and then shock everyone on release to create a big buzz?
The first phone to come with an inbuilt anamorphic lens?
