Will the Huawei Mate 30 Pro have a ‘Cine-Lens’?

Huawei’s new flagship smartphone will be upon us soon. Designs have been leaked and rumours rumoured. Folks who can create 3D models and animate them with shimmering lines and sparkly dust type stuff have been hard at work.

If the leaks and the rumours and animations with uplifting music are anything to go by, the top developers at Huawei have got together to solve their biggest problem: “How can we combat Apple’s most ugly phone design mastery?”

“You mean the square lumpy camera mount thingy?”

“I do indeed mean the square lumpy camera mount thingy.”

“I know, we should do a circle. Everyone knows circles are better than squares.”

“I like it. However, instead of lumpy ours should be… not lumpy.”

“Genius.”

“Cine-Lens” and “Camera Matrix”

But there is more…

Dutch site LetsGoDigital has unearthed two trademark applications filed by Huawei with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) for the names “Cine-Lens” and “Camera Matrix”.

Interestingly, the Cine-Lens filing is described as “cinema photography; optical lenses for recording, reproduction and processing of sound, images and / or data; smartphones; camcorders; cameras”.

So, the “cine-lens” is clearly going to be designed for video shooting. Until recently, smartphone makers have focused on the stills photography use of their cameras with video as a seemingly less important feature. So to see a major manufacturer of smartphones looking at making vide more important is good news for us smartphone filmmakers.

The second listing, for the Camera Matrix, contains the description: “optical lenses; cameras; smartphones.”

2 + 2 = ?

That the trademark applications are related to the Huawei Mate 30 Pro is not yet confirmed. This is all pure online speculation.

However, the Huawei Mate 30 series of phones is slated for arrival this October. So the timing of this filing is being touted as strong reason for the Cine-Lens and Camera Matrix to be included. If not, then perhaps the Huawei P40 series, down for release in March 2020.

So far we haven’t been to impressed with Huawei smartphones video performance, despite many rave reviews for their recent devices. Although they do have many crowd-pleasing elements, our opinion is they’re more gimmick-like and not up to the quality of Samsung, iPhone, Google Pixel and others.

Hopefully, these rumours indicate that Huawei are set to produce smartphones with serious video shooting capability.

Curvy screen

Other leaks point to the Huawei Mate 30 pro designed with a seriously curvy screen.

@Universelce is what’s known in the game as a “leaker of notable repute”. In other words, the anonymous twitter’s leaks are generally considered reliable. And it looks like the curve is larger and steeper than on recent Samsung phones.

Apparently some people the shape of screen curves on smartphones endlessly fascinating. In fact, some people write entire posts talking about nothing but the rumoured curve of an unreleased smartphone. But I’m only including it here because I wanted to reach 500 words for the post.
