Steven Soderbergh Explains Why He Shot an iPhone Movie
“I look at the movie now and I don’t think it would have been as good if I’d had to shoot it in a conventional way.” Steven Soderbergh, talking about Unsane, shot on iPhones.
As a festival exclusively for films shot on smartphones, we are believers in the idea of using the device for its strengths. The size of the device provides many advantages for filmmakers, even those with $1m+ budgets such as Soderbergh. As a filmmaker I’m much more excited about that, than trying to hide the camera’s weaknesses.
It’s worth reminding ourselves – Soderbergh’s iPhone movie Unsane has so far taken $14.2 million at the box office, using a camera millions of us carry around in our pockets.
Asked if he would ever use iPhones to shoot a movie again, Soderbergh emphasised there was now no turning back for him: “Yeah, I’m planning to next week.”
