Diveroid Camera and Diving Computer Now on Kickstarter

Smartphones can be great tools for shooting underwater video and photos. Their size and utility make them ideal to take with you when diving. But as smartphones are not waterproof they’ll need some kind of housing to keep the water out.

The Diveriod housing is designed to fit nearly all smartphone models and sizes, which means you don’t have to get a new one each time you replace your phone. But it’s not only a housing, it’s also a compass and a diving computer too.

Diving Computer

A diving computer can be an essential piece of safety equipment. They can prevent accidents by measuring the depth, dive duration, and the ascending speed. The makers of Diveroid say it is the only existing dive computer with an all-in-one solution.

On their Kickstarter page, they say Diveroid CEO “Jungil Kim is an experienced diver of more than 10 years. All of the Diveroid team members are also professional divers too.”

The great advantage smartphones have over bigger cameras is their multi functionality. They are essentially mini computers with a high quality camera. So designing a diving computer – camera combo is a logical use of the smartphone’s capabilities.

The housing device protects your phone underwater while simultaneously allowing you to use the silver buttons to operate the device. Although, in a disclaimer, they say “features such as the ultra-wide-angle, zoom, selfie and 4k video quality only works on supported smartphones”.

Colour Correction

Water has a filter effect on light and the deeper you go, the more that filter is applied. At 5 meters, for example, you have already lost most of the red spectrum. At 40 meters, almost all the frequencies are diffused into the water, except for blue light.

This means, to get a truer (more attractive) appearance, you need to add red. The Diveroid folks say they “make this possible with our algorithm.” But I’m guessing it’s more of a simple white balance effect. At least, it seems the app just pushes the colour temp towards the red.

Logbook

In addition, the Diveroid app works as a photo and video logbook.

Anti-Fog System

The Diveroid also has five Heat sink drains which prevent fogging inside the housing. The housing itself works up to 60M/200ft below the surface.

The Diveroid campaign has a few days left, if underwater photography is something you’re interested in trying. They are already well past their goal, so this looks like a device which is fulfilling a need.
