DJI Osmo Pocket

DJI are bringing us a new pocking vlogging cam. It’s not out yet, but DJI are leaky. The word on the net is the camera might compete directly with the GoPro Hero 7.

Well, here’s a picture:

What’s that silver wheel for? This was tweeted by twitter user OsitaLV a few days ago. A camera plus stabilizer, and you can fit the entire thing into the palm of your hand?

“Depending on what camera it has, this wheel could either be there to control zoom or, if not, follow focus, which allows you to pull focus more accurately.” Mark Wilson

This is the gimbal-stabilized pocket camera called the DJI Osmo Pocket and follows the ongoing push towards shrinking down and mobility.

According to these leaks, the DJI Osmo Pocket is a smaller relative of the DJI Osmo Mobile 2. There’s a built-in camera that looks very similar to the DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone’s. But will the DJI Osmo Pocket turn out to be the ultimate vlogging companion?

DJI’s launch event is at scheduled for 7pm UK time today (November 28 2018), so if the DJI Osmo Pocket is announced it seems likely that it’ll be available very soon after that. So looks like they’re aiming to get this out for Christmas.

If you buy one, allegedly it will arrive like this:

But what about the camera?

Hopes are the DJI Osmo Pocket comes with a Hasselblad camera with a one-inch sensor, like the DJI Mavic 2 Pro. If so, that would trump the GoPro hero 7 Black, which still only has a smaller 1/2.3-inch sensor.

“However, I am excited about having a new Osmo, that can fit in your hand. That’s very small and easy to carry around. Because that’s what made the Mavic so popular.” Brett Garamella

Rumours say the DJI Osmo Pocket will have a multi-touch screen, Wi-Fi for transferring videos and stills to your phone, and a microSDXC card slot.

Further detective work from the back of the packaging: Osmo Pocket is compatible with lightning/USB-C smartphones and has a 875mAH battery. This is smaller in capacity than the GoPro Hero 7 Black’s 1220mAh unit.

There’s also talk of a DJI Mimo app which will be available to download from Google Play and Apple’s App Store.

So, this looks to be an exciting product. Hopefully, by 7pm UK time tonight we will know exactly what this thing can do.
