iPhone Accessory Insta360 Nano S Creates 360-degree Videos in 4k

Insta360 has unveiled an upgraded version of its 360-degree Nano camera that attaches to iPhones, called the Nano S.

The upgrade comes in the form of 4K video recording and 20MP stills.

Other than that, the Nano S looks the same as the previous version and connects to your iPhone’s Lightning port.

After filming, Nano S shooters can edit the 360-degree videos and photos for sharing through Insta360’s Nano S app.

360-degree live-streaming via YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter (through Periscope) comes integrated.

“The camera really seems to be built for social media because it’s super easy to use, plus editing and sharing can be done directly from your phone.” The Verge

The camera turns your iPhone into a real-time 360-degree viewfinder. The iPhone’s gyroscope syncs with the Nano S, however it can also be used on its own. You can also re-frame the best parts of your 360-degree videos in standard rectangular frames after shooting. You can also go back and select the particular shots by manoeuvring your phone to explore a 360-degree clip.

New features include a 360-degree video chat, and a MultiView function that allows users to show different angles of a scene at the same time, live.

360 Video Calls

A 360-degree video call can be made, even if the person receiving doesn’t own a Nano S. Just generate a link in the Nano S app, then send to the receiver. From the link, they’ll be able to see your 360-degree view.

The Nano S comes in black or silver and is available from the Insta360 store.

Android Users

Insta360 also make models for Android users. There’s the Insta360 One which shoots at a maximum of 120 FPS, while 240 FPS video is achieved algorithmically with the companion app.

This model shoots 4K 360° video and 24 MP 360° photos. You can reframe the best parts, or share a full 360° experience straight from your phone.

Bear in mind, for Android you need a $30 adapter that reportedly only works for some phones.

insta360 One X

There’s also the Insta360 ONE X, controlled via an iPhone or Android smartphone (rather than mounted directly to the phone). The 5.7K resolution which means you can re-frame the spherical footage and extract a standard 16:9 video with good resolution after capture.

5.7K video is recorded at 30 frames per second. For smooth motion in action videos or slow-motion effects you can also opt to record 4K footage at 50fps or 3K video at 100fps. In photo mode the camera captures 18MP still images.

“The One X also comes with an improved version of Insta360’s FlowState stabilization and a new TimeShift feature that lets users adjust the speed of different parts of a clip to put the focus on key moments, using either slow-motion or hyperlapse effects. The “Bullet-time” special effect was already available on the predecessor Insta360 One.” Lars Rehm.
