Motorola One Action: Shoot Vertical, Watch Horizontal

People want more versatile ways to shoot video. There’s iPhones, Androids and GoPros. Getting in on the action is Motorola with their new One Action smartphone.

The phone comes with 3 rear cameras, one of which is a dedicated ultra-wide video camera with a 117-degree field of view. But while you hold your phone vertically, the lens will rotate to allow your phone to record horizontal video.

Sony brought out their Xperia 1 smartphone this year. And the One Action also carries a 21×9 cinematic ratio screen, just to emphasise the importance of the horizontal. That’s because filmmakers and smartphone makers have realised more and more people are watching movies and TV shows on their phones.

A long thin phone can be more comfortable to hold vertically. So it makes sense Motorola have come up with this idea for shooting landscape video whilst holding the phone more comfortably. It’s one of those “Why has no-one thought of this before?” ideas.

Motorola also say the One Action’s algorithms offer “Enhanced Video Stabilization”. This is a budget Android with a 6.3-inch (16 cm) FHD+ panel, including a hole-punch cutout for a 12-megapixel camera. Unfortunately that hole makes a bit of a mess of your cinematic viewing.

The other rear lenses are a 12-megapixel main lens, and a 5-megapixel depth sensor for portrait effects.

The Motorola One Action is powered by a Samsung Exynos 9609 processor. There’s also 4GB of RAM, 128GB of onboard storage, a USB-C port, a headphone jack and a 3,500mAh battery. You can also add up to 512GB extra storage with a microSD card.

Motorola say One Action will be available starting August 16, 2019 in Brazil, Mexico and various European countries at a price of €259. Then it will roll out later in countries in Latin America, Europe, and Asia Pacific. The Motorola One Action will be coming to the U.S.A universally unlocked and Canada in early October.
