DoubleTake – iPhone Dual Camera App from FiLMiC Pro

The long awaited FiLMiC Pro simultaneous dual camera recording functionality is finally here for iOS. However, it’s not yet integrated into the FiLMiC Pro app. Instead, FiLMiC have released a separate app called DoubleTake and it’s free to download and use, right now.

FiLMiC say that for now the new app is more of a beta tester. However, in the future the dual camera recording feature will be integrated into the main FiLMiC Pro app. By releasing this free tester app they will get a better idea of how to integrate it.

1080p

The DoubleTake app can record two 1080p recordings simultaneously at 24fps, 25fps or 30fps. The 25fps option is good news for Europeans dealing with artificial light from 50hz electricity. Recording 2 videos at the same time is obviously going to require double processing power, therefore only 1080p (that’s my guess).

FiLMiC say that “1080p video is the maximum resolution supported by the Apple API for multi-cam capture”.

Digital zoom is not an option and manual controls in general are limited, compared to the FiLMiC Pro main app. However, there is the option to save videos separately or combine them in some form of split screen.

Main options are:

  • Capture two different focal lengths of the same subject at the same time. For example, 2 of the iPhone 11 Pro’s Wide, Tele and Ultra Wide lenses simultaneously.
  • Capture two full size 1080p videos with the front and rear cameras.
  • PiP (Picture-In-Picture) records a main camera with the reverse camera embedded in the same image.

  • Split-screen combines 2 videos equally.

Quick launch

While dual cam recording is not yet a feature of FiLMiC’s main app, DoubleTake can be quick launched from FiLMiC Pro v6.10.5 via lens selector (supported iOS devices only).

FiLMiC Pro 7

FiLMiC say that “Advanced multi-cam functionality coming to FiLMiC Pro V7” which will be available late spring 2020.

Vloggers, MoJo

While it’s still in the development phase, the app looks like it could already be useful for vloggers and mobile journalists. For fiction filming I don’t see much use in it – except as a storytelling device. For example, a film about vloggers or mobile journalists!
