Google Pixel 4 XL – More Pre-Release Leaks

There’s more leaks regarding the upcoming release of the Google Pixel 4 XL. A few days ago, we had some images appear giving us some clues about the new Pixel smartphone.

We saw there was an iPhone 11 style square camera housing on the back. We also heard about a possible ToF sensor.

Now, we have a full video of what looks like a prototype of the phone. For that reason (presumably), some functions don’t work correctly.

All the rumours seem to come from a organisation called D Store. And this business is located in Hanoi, Vietnam. Why Vietnam? Probably because Google reportedly moved it production of products including the Pixel smartphone there to to circumvent the current trade war between the US and China.

What’s in the video?

The video is from a Vietnamese YouTube channel called AnhEm TV. The presenter goes through the look and functions of the prototype, like a early unboxing. So this leak is more of a complete reveal than merely some teasing hints.

As this is a prototype, we can expect the final casing material to look different to this. However, it shows the square camera housing placed exactly like the iPhone 11. Also, this prototype comes with only 2 rear cameras, compared to the iPhone 11 pro’s 3 rear cameras.

AnhEm say the phone uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset with 6GB ram. The XL battery is said to be 3,700mAh. The phone will run on Google’s own Android 10.

Added to that, the Pixel 4 series will carry a 90Hz display. Some minor things to note: there’s a pink/orange button on the side and no headphone jack. We’ve also been told there will be a f1.73 aperture on the main 12.2MP camera and dual 8.1MP + 0.3MP front cameras. Other information suggests the Pixel 4 XL could shoot in 16:9 by default despite a 4:3 sensor.

These images give us a good insight into the technical specifications of the Google Pixel 4 XL cameras.

Note that the pixel size of the main camera sensor is 1.4µm, which is the same as the new iPhone 11 main camera. Pixel size is very relevant to how well a senor functions in low light conditions. For example, the newly released Huawei Mate 30 Pro has two 40MP sensors with an estimated pixel size of only 1μm.

But then we have to take into account new technology which bundles pixels together when needed.

Anyway, unless you are a smartphone camera engineer, I think all this tech speak is hard to comprehend. The best way to see how good a smartphone camera performs (or software claiming to improve your camera’s image quality) is in practical use.
