RØDE Wireless GO Microphone System

Featuring up to 70m of range, 7 hours of battery, in-built omnidirectional mic and more, the Wireless GO is compact and designed with smartphone filmmakers in mind.

RØDE have been bringing us affordable filmmaker microphones since around about the early 90s. Since smartphones became viable pro video cameras, RØDE have been helping to improve their audio capture capability. The new RØDE Wireless Go is their latest innovation.

“the world’s smallest beltpack transmitter for a lavalier microphone” RØDE

The kit comprises two tiny boxes, which bring you high-quality, single-channel wireless audio direct to your smartphone. Like regular wireless lavalier set ups, the kit is made up of a transmitter and a receiver. Each box measures only 44mm x 45.3mm x 18.5mm and weighs just 31g.

There are a few differences to regular wireless microphone systems. First, one box has an inbuilt omnidirectional microphone so you can simply clip this box as you would a lavalier mic, close to the speaker’s mouth. However, this box is more visible than a lavalier. So RØDE have included the option to attach your own lavalier mic to the transmitter box (via a 3.5 mm TRS input).

Note: there’s a three-stage output pad (0dB, -6dB, -12dB) to adjust the output to your camera or recorder.

Meanwhile, the receiver has room for a small display in front for battery and signal strength. The receiver can clip onto belts and clothing or slip into camera mounts. The system can connect to a camera’s audio input via a 3.5mm TRS output. But (with the proper adapters) you can even connect to GoPros and smartphones.

2.4GHz digital wireless transmission

The RØDE Wireless Go operates with RØDEs series III 2.4GHz digital wireless transmission, secured by 128-bit encryption.

With no cables to slow you down, RØDE are aiming the mic at run-and-gun journalists and vloggers.

“All-new Series III 2.4GHz digital wireless transmission with 128-bit encryption designed to deliver crystal clear audio under any conditions, even in locations with dense Wi-Fi and Bluetooth activity like shopping malls, conventions, hotels etc” RØDE

The built-in battery will last 7 hours before needing a recharge via a USB-C cable.

Good quality wireless microphones (like the workhorse Sennheiser G4) can be expensive. The price of the Wireless Go is certainly competitive in comparison to the Sennheiser and comparable units.

There are similar devices in more direct competition, however. Such as Sennheiser’s XS system and the Instamic.
