Boy Meets Girl Meets iPhone 8: Music Video

La Nostra Intersezione is a beautifully shot, lit and performed music video from Italian filmmaker Filippo Di Primio. We asked him to tell us more about the video:

What is the story behind your film?

A boy and a girl who meet at a house party and feel like they have to be together. The house (lighting), partygoers and the musician are external forces that pull them back and push them together until they find their “intersection”.

What were the steps which led you to make it?

We collaborate frequently with the band and together talked about making a film in their garage on this song.
They were really really helpful making the full-of-old-big-stuff garage into an empty space in which we could re-create an apartment, with old furniture we all had at home.

The interesting thing is that we made a call of action on Instagram to let the fans be a part of the film. We chose the leading actors and about 50 people came to help for the scenes, the free-bar final party helped. (Ahah)

Why did you choose a smartphone to film with?

Because we involved a lot of people on set (leading actors, partygoers, band’s service guys to light and us) and wanted to be fast and light. We also had a not so big location and only an evening to shoot it. We could set up the scenes really fast, this let us shot everything we needed* and had time for some improvisation and the final party (that was “live”).

*didn’t have time for b-roll though.

What equipment did you use?

We used an iPhone 8, on DJI Osmo Mobile II, Moment lenses, Aputure lights (just for leading, we lit up the set with props and band’s service lights), FilmicPro, edited on FCPX and graded with Resolve.

How much did you know about filmmaking before you made this film?

We’ve been making film and content creation for 5 years, starting from zero and learning by “doing-it” and internet.

What did you like/not like about filming with a phone?

Liked freedom and being fast on set. We were really happy and later we shot a commercial and a social campaign with iPhone – Filmic – Moment.

Has making the film changed your life in any way?

Not for now. (Ahah)

How successful was the film, personally and in gaining an audience for your work?

Shooting with a smartphone was a challenge and let us grow as professionals.

Looking back on the movie, is there anything you’d have done differently?

Maybe tried to have some more time for shooting b-roll.

How important are film festivals that give these kind of films a platform for you?

They really matter. They allow people just started to get some attention and make people connect.
